Integrated Pest Management
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) focuses on managing crop pests with a specific emphasis on identifying and expanding on environmentally and economically beneficial techniques.
We believe that a truly progressive IPM approach is one that’s geared towards replacement of pesticides with environmentally sound alternatives while integrating those into economically viable strategies for management of pests and diseases.
IPM works on the premise that the crop can tolerate some pest presence without causing economic loss to the grower. Control measures are taken only when pest levels approach a level that will be seen as causing significant economic loss to a grower or reducing the long-term health of the soil.
Reducing Plastics & Excess Packaging
Finding innovative ways to reduce the use of plastics and eliminate excess packaging is a never-ending journey for us here at Earth And Time. Our goal is to make packaging choices that are focused on continuous improvement while providing a long-term benefit to farmers, consumers and the environment.
We start by questioning whether produce needs to be packaged at all. Over 50 per cent of our produce ships in highly recyclable corrugated cartons so consumers and food service customers have a quick, easy option to purchase produce with little or no excess packaging.
And when a bag is needed, we’ve found that sometime the simplest changes can make the biggest difference. All our potato packaging employs innovative light-blocking films. This reduces product “greening” on store shelves, which shelf life and helps eliminate food waste.
We’re currently researching and testing compostable and biodegradable components that could be implemented in future packaging decisions. We’re also working to keep packaging costs in line to ensure our produce is affordable and remains an easy nutrient-rich meal planning choice for families.
Working to reduce our impact
Our distribution facility was purpose-built to reduce emissions and overall electrical consumption.
All forklifts are 100% electric, reducing greenhouse emissions, and all of our high-efficiency LED warehouse and office lighting are motion activated to ensure they turn off when no one is around.
Land levelling has existed for thousands of years. It’s a simple procedure designed to prepare the land before sowing and it can reap massive returns by increasing yields, saving water and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
When a field has been laser levelled, it is more even meaning natural rainfall and irrigation water reaches every part of the soil with minimal waste from run-off or waterlogging caused by pooling. Greenhouse gasses and overall energy consumption are also reduced as less time is spent irrigating. Level land also makes the use of tractors and other equipment more efficient.
Laser land levelling alone cannot create sustainable agriculture. When used in combination with other resource-saving practices and technologies like energy-efficient irrigation, targeted nutrient application, precision seeding and proper crop management, the gains can be multiplied for each farmer and the community as a whole.
